Chairperson's Address
Doonbeg Community Development would like to welcome the opening of the Lodge
and Suites at Doonbeg Golf Club and wish all those involved every success
for the future. We look forward to the day when this beautiful golf
course will host a major competition. The jobs created by this
development are welcomed and we hope that many of those employed will decide
to live in the Doonbeg area.
We at DCD are proud of our
role in securing this project as a lot of work was done by local people to
ensure that the Golf Club came to Doonbeg. The chairperson of the
Planning Appeal Board, 'An Bord Pleana' said that she had not
witnessed such strong community support for any other appeal that she had
been involved in.
It is inevitable that this
development is changing the face of Doonbeg. Our hope is that the
pressure on infrastructure will not prevent the local young population from
building and residing in Doonbeg. We are concerned with the planning
process and the way the County Council is treating our local young people
who are trying to building in their community. Many are forced to make
change after change in their plans, each time costing them more and more
money. We are ware of these problems and are lobbying Clare County Council
and councillors to help support local people to obtain their planning
permission; and we continue to work to create a community that will be
welcoming and supportive of all that live here.
One of the key point in
DCD's support of the golf project was the new sewerage improvement scheme
which is about to come on line to help protect our beautiful beaches from
contamination. This scheme has been funded by Doonbeg Golf Club
through Clare County Council.
We continue to express our
appreciation of the FAS Community Employment Scheme which helps us maintain
and develop our amenities. Special thanks to Nuala Shanahan and the
FAS workers for their efforts and commitment to Doonbeg.
A special congratulations
to Murt McInerney and the cast and crew of Doonbeg Drama Group for
making 'Many Young Men of Twenty' such a huge success. They took second
place in the confined finals of the All Ireland Drama Finals. YOU ARE ALL
STARS!!! Thank you for your gifts of music, laughter and song.
The future role of DCD is continually being examined and while we will have
to adapt to meet the new challenges that arise, there is need for a strong
development company in our community. Participation is vital - if you
have an interest in finding out more, call into our office in the community
hall or contact any of the Board of Directors.
