Doonbeg Community
Development Ltd. began its involvement with FAS in 1989 as sponsors of
Community Employment Projects. The objective of the sponsors was to improve
the quality of life for all people living in Doonbeg by:
- Developing our natural environment and
cultural assets,
- Supporting and initiating job creating
projects
- Improving the skills of unemployed
people.
In the first two years the 'Social
Employment Scheme' had only two participants but as the Development Company
became more established, the number of participants increased to meet the
needs of the sponsors. Today, up to 16 participants have been employed
through the project.
The start of the office itself with all the
services that locals have come to value so highly, took place in May 1994.
Mary Blake and Margaret Walshe provided clerical assistance to the
Development, an administrative centre for the Community Employment Project,
tourist information and an outlet for local crafts, etc.
The support provided by this CE Project
through the work done by the many participants on numerous projects
has helped Doonbeg Community Development make considerable advances in
improving the local quality of life. Tidy Towns, The Family Festival, the
Annual Christmas Lighting, the GAA Grounds and the Drama Festival have been supported by the
efforts of participants in the FAS Community Employment Project and we
appreciate their hard work!
The FAS CE Project, with all of its aspects, such as environmental
conservation, upkeep of parish property (churches, etc.), community hall,
graveyards, parks, amenity areas, football grounds, children’s pla yground
and office, are an integral part of Doonbeg. In short, Doonbeg could
not function without this project. In return,
the participants have many and varied training opportunities and job work
experience to prepare them
for future employment. The
FAS CE Project in Doonbeg offers a local, friendly, non-frightening
environment for unemployed men and women to get the help they need.
Courses such as CV Preparation and Job Interview Skills directly prepare the
participants to meet the challenges of the ‘real world.’
Office participants have had the opportunity
to learn web design, computer maintenance and desktop publishing skills and
have assisted in the creation of the
www.DoonbegInfo.com website, the parish data base, the phone directory
and the forthcoming tourist brochure. |
